Description

This coupe-shaped kobachi small bowl was made using the kohiki technique, meaning “powder pull” in Japanese. This method involves coating a darker clay base with a layer of white liquid clay slip to create a soft, matte finish. Brown hues from the darker clay peek through the milky-white surface, adding depth and giving the piece an earthy, rustic character. Each kohiki piece is handmade, so no two are exactly alike. Rich, natural colors and a finish that develops a patina over time beautifully embody the wabi-sabi aesthetic.

Its shallow bowl and wide rim elegantly frame each dish presented within, whether savory side dishes, appetizers, or even desserts such as ice cream. Beyond the dining table, this versatile piece can also be used as a trinket holder, adding a touch of rustic charm wherever it is placed.

Kobachi Small Bowls

Kobachi small bowls are perfect for serving appetizers, side dishes, or simmered foods. With more depth than a small plate but a smaller footprint than a donburi or ramen bowl, they are just the right size for nimono (simmered dishes) or sunomono (vinegared salads).

Adding kobachi small bowls to your table setting brings variety in form and color, enhancing the visual balance of your meal and capturing the spirit of Japanese home dining. All bowls in this collection measure under 12.9 cm (5.1 in) in diameter.
