This Matcha bowl Chawan is a soft ivory color with a fan motif with traditional patterns such as Shippo pattern and Hanazume.
The "Shippo" is a pattern in which parallel circles of the same size are overlaid one quarter on top of the other, resulting in a continuous combination of a diamond-like shape and a petal-like shape. It signifies peace, happiness, and prosperity of offspring in an endless chain of circles.
"Hanazume" is a typical Kutani Ware design from the Taisho period (1912-1926), meaning "full of flowers," and it is covered with floral designs.
This Matcha bowl uses a technique called "Kannyu" (penetration), which intentionally creates a crack-like pattern that can be seen under the glaze.
Chie Sakurai is a Kutani Ware artist known for creating a wide range of works, from familiar patterns of plants and animals to patterns incorporating traditional patterns.
In order to give a soft atmosphere to her works, she takes the time and effort to create her pieces from underglaze painting to overglaze painting, which is rare among Kutani Ware artists. Her works are both unique and accessible for everyday use, and are sure to touch the hearts of all who see it.
The smooth and thin rim makes it easy to drink matcha. It is also recommended to drink coffee or tea.
